Browser – Pat-Insights! works best with Google Chrome or Apple Safari browsers. While other browsers may work, you will likely find Chrome or Safari to be much faster and better formatted.

Logging In – To Log into Pat-Insights!, select the “Log-In” option in the top menu or right column menu on some web pages.

Quick Search – To quickly get Insights! for a US granted patent, type the patent number (i.e. “7654321”, “US7654321”, “7,654,321”, or “RE54321”) in the “Quick Search Pat-Insights!” box and either press [Enter] or click [Get Insights!]. No account is currently required to perform this action. The program will try to find the highest value use (Offensive, Defensive, or Sell/License) and provide all views and all text options.

Search Insights! – You must be logged in to use this feature. To search one or multiple patents, enter (or copy/paste) patents one per line in the text area box. There is currently no limit other than the browser and server capabilities, but it is best if kept below 100 patents. The box can be expanded if desired by selecting and dragging the lower right corner of the box. Select the number of patents/page to view by use of the drop box. Select the projected use by use of the drop box. If you do not know the projected use, select “Unknown –Suggest” and the program will determine it for you.

To select the view of the Insights, select “Table & Chart” to get a table with verbal descriptions and a relative bar chart, “Radar” to get a couple of radar plots to view the relative various Insights!, “Bubble/Hist.” to get a bubble chart showing the relative legal and commercial value. If “all” is selected for patents/page view and “list” for the text view, a set of histograms will be generated to show how the various patents in the portfolio have their values or insights distributed. If “all” is selected for patents/page view and “none” for the text view, a simple scatter plot will be drawn of the legal and commercial values to get a quick overview of a portfolio.

To get more information about patents, select the desired Text. “Links” will provide a set of link in a window on the webpage to view EPO bibliographic, legal events, freepatentsonline.com information, and patent lens information. “Summary” will provide a brief table summarizing the patent along with title and abstract. “All” will provide both the Links and Summary information. “None” will not display any text, which is useful if you just want to compare graphs, such as radar plots. “List” will provide a summary of the information in list form along with links to various additional information. If “List” is chosen and “all” is selected for Patents/Page then a summary of average, median, min, max, and std (standard deviation) will be displayed along with the list. “Download” will provide the list view without the summary information and also provide a link to a .csv file with all the Pat-Insight! information (select “all” for Patents/Page for complete portfolio information) for further analysis in Excel, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, or other programs.

Once all the options have been selected, select or click {Get Insights!]. This will take you to a confirmation page. Select [Yes] to acknowledge the disclaimer and get Pat-Insights!. Select [No] to return to the Search Insights! menu.
While more than 100 patents can be searched, the program generally take 20-30 minutes to get 1000 or more patents. This is due to information being retrieved from Google and EPO servers. During certain times of the day, these servers can be quite slow. The fastest response time is usually late in the afternoon Pacific time when the EPO servers are less busy. Selecting “None” for View will cause the program to not use the Google servers for the graph generation and speed up the response.

Portfolio Management – Pat-Insights! allows for creating and managing portfolios of patents to help in comparison of various sets of patents. To create a portfolio, first enter the patents numbers in the Search Insights! text area (one per line) and enter the portfolio name (no spaces, use an underscore “_” instead) in the New Portfolio text box. The labels can be used to create sub-portfolios which can be loaded, added, or deleted to. Select the [Create] button and the program will create the portfolio and update the webpage. To select a saved portfolio, use the dropdown boxes from Existing Portfolios, Existing Label1s, and Existing Label2s. You can select a blank Label1 or Label2 and load the entire portfolio. If Lable1 or Label2 are non-blank, they will be used as filters to select sub-portfolios.

Definitions:
Projected Use:
Offensive – This selection determines the relative ranking between the patent chosen and its contemporary peers. It offers the most resolution of differentiation and appears to correlate best with litigation damages.

Defensive – This selection determines the relative ranking between the patent chose and its contemporary peers but does not have as much resolution as Offensive to account for a lack of information on how it will actually be used. The data has been normalized to enhance those which would be most helpful in a counter assertion as well as de-emphasing those which are unlikely to be helpful. A Defensive full valuation which is higher than the Offensive valuation is an indication that the patent has a much more balanced set of Insights!.

Sell/License – This selection determines a relative ranking and value based on having less information available and compensating accordingly. The outliers are de-emphaised while those towards the center of the distribution are somewhat emphasized more than if looked at more carefully. The valuation generally reflects the 25% rule of splitting the profits. This selection gives a distribution of values similar to the EPO patent survey of owners and reflects more what the owner believes the value is rather than the purchaser/licensor.
